Midden in de Spaanse provincie Exremadura ligt Monfraque Nationaal Park. Interessante en mooie steden Caceres, Trujillo en Plasencia niet ver er vandaan. Het park is een echt birder’s gebied met als belangrijkste plek de gierenrots Salto del Gitano. Een steile rots aan de rivier de Taag. Vale- en Monniksgieren zijn hier te vinden. Karakteristiek met hun kale nekken vallen de Vale gieren het meest op. Spanwijdte ruim een 2.5 meter en gewicht ongeveer 10 kilo.
Cirkelend op de thermiek zijn ze met verrekijker en telelens goed te zien. Na een kleine pittige klim zijn ze vanaf het iets verder gelegen Monfraque Castillo, een oud Moors kasteel, nog dichterbij te zien. Ook vandaar goed de weidsheid van het Taag gebied te zien. Met de edelherten en vele roofvogels, blauwe eksters, zwarte ooievaars en vele andere vogelsoorten maken toch de gieren de meeste indruk.
Vogelweetje: De vale gier, de vuilnisman van de natuur, heeft zo’n sterk maagzuur dat hij rottend vlees kan eten waar ander dieren dood van gaan.

Bird fact: The Griffon vulture, the garbage man of nature, has such a strong stomach acid that he can eat decaying flesh that other animals are dying of.
