Een van de andere bijzondere endemische vogelsoorten van Madeira is de Berthelot’s pieper.
Hij komt alleen hier voor en op de Canarische eilanden. Lijkt op een Graspieper maar heeft een grotere kop en een fijnere snavel. Het gebied waar hij leeft is Ponta de Sao Lourenco aan het uiterste oosteinde van het eiland. Een droog, vulkanisch maanlandschap met korte vegetatie.
Vogelweetje: Sabino Berthelot ( Frankrijk 1794 – Tenerife 1820 ) was natuuronderzoeker op de Canarische eilanden. Samen met Philip Barker Webb schreef hij de Natural history of the Canary Islands. Hij was ook directeur van een botanische tuin en Consul voor Frankrijk.
MADEIRA, BERTHELOT’S PIPIT
One of the other special endemic bird species on Madeira is the Berthelot’s pipit.
He occurs also on the Canary Islands. Looks like the Meadow Pipit but his head is bigger and beak slimmer. The habitat on Madeira is Ponta de Sao Lourenco at the extremely east end of the island. Dry, volcanic moonlike landscape with short vegetation.
Bird fact: Sabino Berthelot (France 1794 – Tenerife 1820) was a naturalist in the Canary Islands. Together with Philip Barker Webb, he wrote the Natural history of the Canary Islands. He was also the director of a botanical garden and Consul for France.
