Algemeen aanwezig, maar toch speciaal is de Madeira vink. Precies het uiterlijk van onze Europese vink maar deze endemische ondersoort is groen in plaats van bruin.
Komt bijna overal op het eiland voor maar vooral in bosachtig gebied, veel laurierbossen, en speciaal bij de picknick plaatsen. Ook heb ik ze gezien in de Madeira Botanical Garden in Funchal. Prachtige omgeving. Ze zijn zeker niet schuw en azen op de leftovers van de toeristen.
Vogelweetje: Blinde vinken waren in de achttiende en negentiende eeuw werkelijk echte vinken. Hun oogleden werden aan elkaar gebrand. Men dacht dat ze dan betere zangers zouden zijn bij zangwedstrijden die in die tijd populair waren. Pas na de eerste wereldoorlog gebruikte men ziende vinken in geblindeerde kooitjes.
MADEIRA, DE MADEIRA CHAFFINCH
Generally present, yet special is the Madeira Chaffinch. Exactly the look of our European chaffinch but this endemic subspecies is green instead of brown.
Comes almost everywhere on the island but especially in forest area, many Laurel forests, and especially in the picnic areas. Also, I have seen them in the Madeira Botanical Garden in Funchal. Beautiful surroundings. They are definitely not shy and preying on the leftovers of the tourists.
Bird fact: Blind chaffinches (a Dutch meat) in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were really real. Their eyelids were burned to each other. It was thought that they would be better singers at singing contests which were popular at that time. After the first world war seeing finches in blacked-out cages used.
